Outbrain established their operations in Europe in 2011 and now has offices in London, Paris, Munich, Cologne, Madrid and Milan, working with leading online publishers including BBC, SkyNews, L’Equipe, Axel Springer and Huffington Post. We are also working with many household brand names, such as Orange, l’Oreal, Siemens, Coca Cola and Red Bull, who use Outbrain to amplify their content across the web.

The Legal Counsel will be responsible for providing legal support to the European business on a wide range of commercial and operational agreements and issues, including complex distribution and partner agreements and UK and EU corporate matters.  While the Legal counsel will be based in the UK, there will be the need to liaise with external counsel in other jurisdictions to support the business throughout the EU.  

The Legal Counsel will be reporting into the VP, Global Head of Business & Legal Affairs, located in New York.

Your first year should look like this:

In your first month, you should find your bearings, do a deep dive into the Outbrain product, and start to build key internal relationships

After three months, you will have learnt and understood how the business operations work in the context of an exciting ad-tech business

After six months, you’ll be fully up to speed and be able to independently support your key stakeholders

When you finish up your first year, you’ll be an essential part of the Outbrain legal team and the business will not know what to do without you!

Responsibilities

  • Work with business teams to draft, negotiate and execute commercial agreements and advise on legal issues and risks, often in complex deal structures.
  • Provide legal guidance on a range of matters impacting the business.
  • Operate as part of a local and international team of internal and external legal professionals to support business requirements and growth.
  • Advise on compliance aspects of data protection and privacy laws and regulations, including GDPR, e-privacy and other relevant rules and regulations.
  • Work to establish a framework of local policies and guidance to manage legal and commercial issues within the business.
  • Develop administrative processes for managing commercial agreements internally.

Requirements

  • Ability to advise in a commercially pragmatic manner, using legal processes to create meaningful commercial outcomes.
  • You’ll need to be comfortable working in a fast paced environment that is constantly changing.
  • Ability to see the “bigger picture” by carrying out a sensible risk assessment of operational issues (taking into account the Outbrain attitude to commercial risk) and advise on ways to manage such highlighted risk accordingly.
  • Flexibility and willingness to work on a variety of commercial legal matters at all levels of complexity and across jurisdictions (with support of local external counsel).
  • Well–organised, with the ability to set up and manage administrative systems.
  • Highly motivated, with a genuine desire to achieve solutions for the business and support commercial objectives.
  • Comfortable and adept at working in a client-facing role. 

Qualifications, experience and knowledge

  • BA/BSc/LLB required;
  • UK qualified solicitor, possibly dual-qualified in another European jurisdiction
  • 3-5 years PQE
  • Sound knowledge of intellectual property law, online advertising and data protection
  • Easy to work with: flexible, eager to learn, can-do attitude
  • Responsibility heavy and a self-starter
  • Fluent English is compulsory; any additional European languages a plus
